Polyphosphates. Line crosslinked poly - or oligophosphates (chain length 2-6 phosphate links) are polyelectrolytes - products of high molecular weight, which contain a variety of electrical charges in lateral chains. Polyelectrolytes are adsorbed on the surface of the pigment and, therefore, pass on their charges to piment particles. Also phosphates make part of powdered detergents, which remained unchanged for during their evolution
In hard water washing ability  of synthetic detergents sharply reduces. Phosphates are the most cost-beneficial and highly effective water softeners. In addition, they save a washing machine from scale- insoluble salts of magnesium and calcium, which deposit in the form of hard receding incrustation. The problem of eutrophication makes the producers strictly limit the phosphate content in the synthetic detergents. Dosage of use, as a rule, should not exceed 12%, however, the solution of this problem is not found yet.
